  3. This text file explains how to install, run, and register StixWorld and
  4. includes troubleshooting information.  If you have trouble installing or
  5. playing StixWorld, look below.

  23. To get the latest version and information about StixWorld, visit the
  24. StixWorld Web page at http://www.kagi.com/phs

  27. 2) How to Register
  28. ------------------
  29. StixWorld is shareware.  You're free to give copies to your friends, or
  30. upload it to a BBS.  However, if you enjoy playing, please register.
  31. You'll be encouraging future shareware software, plus you'll get this nifty
  32. stuff:

  34.      * The key to the StixArcade, with Blast and Robot Chase
  35.      * Great hints and cheats and mysterious secrets

  37. StixWorld registration costs only $15.  To register by credit card on the 
  38. World Wide Web, visit http://www.kagi.com/phs
  39.  
  40. You can also register by email or snail mail, using either check, credit card,
  41. or money order.  To do so, run Winreg.exe (for Windows) or Register.exe (for
  42. DOS).  These files are located in your StixWorld directory.

  45. 3) Installation and Super Quick Setup
  46. -------------------------------------
  47.    StixWorld has been tested to run on DOS, Windows, Windows 95 and 98, 
  48.    Windows NT, and OS/2.
  49.  
  50.    To install StixWorld, follow the steps below:
  51.  
  52.    1.  Create a separate directory (for example, C:\STIX) in which to install
  53.        the game.
  54.    2.  Unzip the file Stix.zip into your new directory, using a utility such 
  55.        as Pkunzip or WinZip.  
  56.    
  57.    You can get StixWorld running quickly in either of the following cases:
  58.    *   You already know which sound card you have and which parameters it
  59.        takes, and the necessary DOS sound card drivers are loaded.
  60.    *   You want to run StixWorld without sound (not recommended!).
  61.  
  62.    To get it running, perform the following steps:
  63.  
  64.    1.  Run Config.exe and either select the "No Sound" option or enter the
  65.        necessary information for your sound card.
  66.    2.  Run Stx.exe.
  67.  
  68.    If you have any problems, see the full setup sections.

  71. 4) Windows 95/98 Full Setup
  72. ------------------------
  73. You can run StixWorld under two different modes.  The easiest way, described
  74. first, is to run it under Windows 95/98.  If you have problems with that, you 
  75. might want to use MS-DOS mode instead.
  76.  
  77.    Windows 95/98 Mode
  78.    ---------------
  79.    Running StixWorld under Windows 95/98 is the easiest method, assuming you 
  80.    have enough lower memory available.
  81.  
  82.    Before running Config.exe, make sure you know what sound card you have and
  83.    which parameters it takes.  For information, see "Finding Information 
  84.    about your Sound Card" later in this Readme file.

  86.    To set up StixWorld to run under Windows 95/98, follow these steps:
  87.    1.  In Explorer, click Config.exe and enter the necessary information.
  88.    2.  Make sure that necessary DOS sound card drivers are loaded in
  89.        autoexec.bat and/or config.sys.
  90.    3.  Click Stx.exe and enjoy.
  91.  
  92.    If you have any problems with this procedure, see "Solving Common Problems," 
  93.    later in this Readme file.

  95.    MS-DOS Mode
  96.    -----------
  97.    You might want to use MS-DOS Mode if you have autoexec.bat and config.sys
  98.    files that don't work properly with StixWorld, but you don't want to 
  99.    modify them.  For example, they might not provide enough lower memory, or 
  100.    they might not properly load the DOS drivers for your sound card.  One
  101.    disadvantage of MS-DOS Mode is that the computer automatically reboots to
  102.    switch between Windows 95/98 and DOS when Stixworld starts and ends.

  104.    Before running Config.exe, make sure you know what sound card you have and
  105.    which parameters it takes.  For information, see "Finding Information 
  106.    about your Sound Card" later in this Readme file.

  108.    To set up StixWorld to run in MS-DOS Mode, follow the steps below:
  109.    1.  In Explorer, click Config.exe and enter the necessary information.
  110.    2.  Right-click the file Stx.exe, and then click Properties.
  111.    3.  Click the Program tab, and then click the Advanced button.
  112.    4.  Select the "MS-DOS mode" check box, and then modify autoexec.bat and
  113.        config.sys as needed.  Make sure that your sound card driver is 
  114.        properly loaded in one of the files.  This creates the file Stx.pif.
  115.    5.  To run StixWorld, double click Stx.pif or Stx.exe.

  118. 5) DOS Full Setup
  119. -----------------
  120. Before running Config.exe, make sure you know what sound card you have and
  121. which parameters it takes.  For information, see "Finding Information about
  122. your Sound Card" later in this Readme file.

  124. To set up StixWorld to run under DOS, follow these steps:
  125. 1. Run Config.exe and enter the necessary information.
  126. 2. Make sure that necessary DOS sound card drivers are loaded in autoexec.bat
  127.    and/or config.sys.
  128. 3. Run Stx and enjoy.
  129.

  134. 6) Playing the Game
  135. ----------------
  136. The controls in the game are as follows:
  137.  
  138. Movement            - Left and right arrows
  139. Jump                - Ctrl key
  140. Enter door/window   - Up arrow
  141. Game menu           - Esc key
  142. Pause               - P
  143. Zoom in             - Page Down
  144. Zoom out            - Page Up

  147. 7) Finding Information About Your Sound Card
  148. --------------------------------------------
  149. To run StixWorld with sound (highly recommended!), you need to know what 
  150. sound card you have and what parameters it takes.  If you don't have that 
  151. information but you do have Windows 95, you can find out by following the 
  152. procedure below:
  153.  
  154. 1. In Control Panel, double-click System, and then click the Device Manager
  155.    tab.
  156. 2. Click the plus sign next to "Sound, video, and game controllers."  You 
  157.    will see the name of your sound card.
  158. 3. Click your sound card, click the Properties button, and then click the
  159.    Resources tab.
  160. 4. Write down the Input/Output Range settings.  In the Config program, you
  161.    will use the starting address as your port address.
  162. 5. Write down the Interrupt Request setting.  In the Config program, you
  163.    will use it as your IRQ number.
  164. 6. Write down the Direct Memory Access setting.  In the Config program, you
  165.    will use it as your DMA channel.
  166.  
  167. Some sound cards are not listed in StixWorld Config.  If so, see the next
  168. section, "Sound Card Compatibility."
  169.

  171. 8) Sound Card Compatibility
  172. ---------------------------
  173. If your sound card is not listed in StixWorld Config, you can choose a
  174. compatible card.  Most sound cards are compatible with one of the Creative 
  175. Labs SoundBlaster cards listed in StixWorld Config.
  176.  
  177. However, some sound cards, such as the Gravis Ultrasound, require a software
  178. driver that puts them into SoundBlaster compatibility mode. If you have such 
  179. a card, choose the specific SoundBlaster card with which your card is 
  180. compatible (for example, "SoundBlaster Compatible" or "SoundBlaster Pro"), 
  181. and then make sure the compatibility driver is loaded before you run 
  182. StixWorld.  If your sound card is not compatible with any of the sound cards 
  183. listed, or if you do not have a sound card, you can choose the "No Sound" 
  184. option.  You will be missing out on Scott Joplin's ragtime.
  185.  
  186. If you choose an incompatible sound card from the list, you might need to 
  187. reboot and run Config again to choose another.  If your card is compatible
  188. with multiple sound cards but one of the Config choices doesn't work, choose
  189. another.
  190.  
  191. Before running StixWorld, you must make sure that any necessary DOS drivers
  192. for your sound card are loaded.  You cannot use the Windows 95 drivers.  The 
  193. DOS drivers should have come with your sound card, and you can generally 
  194. download them from the sound card manufacturer's Web page, along with
  195. information about modifying the Autoexec.bat and Config.sys files.

  198. 9) Solving Common Problems
  199. --------------------------
  200. This section describes common problems that might occur and how to solve them.
  201.  
  202.    Missing or distorted sound effects or music
  203.    -------------------------------------------
  204.    Make sure the necessary DOS sound card drivers are loaded, and make sure 
  205.    you have selected the correct sound card and parameters in the StixWorld 
  206.    Config program.  For more information, see "Finding Information about Your
  207.    Sound Card" and "Sound Card Compatibility," earlier in this Readme file.

  209.    Computer locks up, reboots, or gives Windows 95 blue screen error
  210.    -----------------------------------------------------------------
  211.    Make sure the necessary DOS sound card drivers are loaded, and make sure 
  212.    you have selected the correct sound card and parameters in the StixWorld 
  213.    Config program.  For more information, see "Finding Information about Your
  214.    Sound Card" and "Sound Card Compatibility," earlier in this Readme file.

  216.    You can also use Chkdsk or Mem to find out how much lower memory you 
  217.    have.  If you have less than 580K of lower memory, freeing up more might 
  218.    solve the problem.  For more information, see the next troubleshooting 
  219.    step.
  220.  
  221.    StixWorld exits and a Not Enough Memory error message appears
  222.    -------------------------------------------------------------
  223.    The amount of lower memory you will need to run StixWorld depends on 
  224.    which sound card driver you have.  With most sound cards, you need only 
  225.    about 535K available.  Some cards require as much as 560K, and if you 
  226.    choose the "No Sound" option, you need only 460K.  To check the amount
  227.    of memory available, run Mem or Chkdsk.
  228.  
  229.    To free up memory, you can modify your autoexec.bat and config.sys files 
  230.    to remove unnecessary TSRs and drivers and to load DOS into high memory.  
  231.    For more information, see the Appendix.  If you don't want to modify those
  232.    files, but only want to disable drivers while you are running StixWorld, 
  233.    you can selectively load drivers at boot.  To do so, press and hold down 
  234.    the F8 key when your computer starts.  You will be asked whether you want 
  235.    to run each line of your autoexec.bat and config.sys files.  
  236.  
  237.    Other Error Messages
  238.    --------------------
  239.    Make sure that the StixWorld directory is the current directory before
  240.    running StixWorld.
  241.    
  242.    Also make sure that your sound card is configured properly.
  243.

  248. Appendix:  Freeing Up Lower Memory
  249. ----------------------------------
  250. Try removing TSR's (such as mouse drivers) from your config.sys and
  251. autoexec.bat files (remember to make backups before changing these
  252. files).

  254. If you have DOS version 5 or above, include the line:
  255.  
  256.   dos=high
  257.  
  258. in your config.sys file after "himem.sys" or another memory manager has
  259. been loaded.
  260.  
  261. For Win95/98, if you are using MSDOS mode, these changes will be made in
  262. the applications properties, int the program tab, under Advanced.
